background: This gene encodes a member of the never in mitosis gene A family of kinases. The encoded protein localizes to the nucleoli, and may function with NEK2A in the S-phase checkpoint. The encoded protein appears to play roles in DNA replication and response to genotoxic stress. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.[provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009] Function: Possible role in S-phase checkpoint mechanism. Subcellular Location: Nucleus. Nucleus > nucleolus. Nuclear during interphase but moves to the polar microtubules during prometaphase and metaphase. Accumulates in the nucleolus in G1/S-arrested cells. Tissue Specificity: Poorly expressed in cerebellum, trachea, lung, appendix, and uterus. Post-translational modifications: Phosphorylated. Similarity: Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. NEK Ser/Thr protein kinase family. NIMA subfamily. Contains 1 protein kinase domain.
