This gene encodes a sperm membrane protein that binds the zona pellucida of the egg in a species-specific manner. The encoded protein may be involved in signaling or gamete recognition. Alternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. Function: Binds in a species-specific manner to the zona pellucida of the egg. May be involved in gamete recognition and/or signaling. Subunit: Probably forms covalent oligomers.
